Of MCALLEN,Texas - Fred A. Steger, Jr., (94 years) left his family and friends to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, June 6. Born of humble beginnings on March 14, 1923, in Pflugerville, TX, he pursued his education at the University of Texas at Austin, culminating with a Master's in Physics. After serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Fred met and married the love of his life, Betty Jo Loftis, with whom he celebrated 53 blessed years of marriage.
Fred and Betty lived in the Pflugerville/Austin area until 1963 when they relocated to Montgomery, AL. There, he worked for 26 years before retiring from the Environmental Protection Agency where he was a research nuclear physicist. Upon retirement, Fred and Betty traveled North America extensively until her passing in 2002.
He spent the next 15 years in McAllen closer to his extended family and enjoying life in the Rio Grande Valley. As an avid, Life Master bridge player, he could be found with various card-playing groups. Fred patronized the arts, local museums, and a myriad of concerts. He loved all music and frequently could be found at the opera. His greatest pleasure, though, was taking his many friends and loved ones out for lunch.
He is survived by his sons Fred A. Steger, III, (Judy) and Andrew A. Steger (Kim); his daughter Betty I. Steger-Moulton (Chris); grandchildren Marissa Eddings (Jordan), Emily Steger, Bryan Steger (Danielle), Erik Steger (Liza), Aaron Moulton, Caitlin Moulton, Claire Steger, and Grace Steger; and three great-grandchildren Kalib Eddings, Tristan Eddings, and Morrigan Steger. He was preceded in death by his son Paul J. Steger.
There will be a funeral service Wednesday, June 14, at 10a.m. It will be held in the sanctuary of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 17701 Cameron Rd., Pflugerville, TX 78660. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be sent to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran or your favorite local charity.
